It
all sounded mighty grand: exclusive terrace opening, with
dinner and the fine Senegalese singer Jean Ngor Maack
providing the soundtrack. In the company of Barcelona’s
finest. |

Only one problem: taking place at Círculo Ecuestre, the embodiment of Catalan bourgeoisie, it requires membership. And even if we could find some geezer to sponsor us, the 12 grand entry fee and annual EUR 800 membership seem a little steep for the privilege of having to wear a jacket and tie, no matter how nice their mansion is, stained glass windows and all.
But expensive dues and restrictive policies have never scared us off; and with their Barbour jackets and cords, they’d have to drape themselves in Union Jacks to be clearer about their weakness for Old Blighty. We sensed a loophole.
For the bargain of EUR 90, you can join the Royal Commonwealth Society as an expat member, and so march into Circulo Ecuestre, taking advantage of the reciprocal membership agreement. It will only grant you access some 20 times per year, but that’s probably also the limit you’ll want to ‘belong’. |
