There
are obviously people out there - even people who aren't
professionally trained or working as sommeliers - who
have a flair for choosing wine. Me, I tend to pick the
wine with the prettiest label. |
 |
That
always makes it difficult in restaurants, where for
some reason they never show pictures of the bottles,
and it's slightly embarrassing, even for me, to send
back a wine because the label is ugly. "But Sir,
it's a Grand Reserva". "Yeah, but the label's
ugly".
So imagine my unease upon learning that Cal Xim is
setting up shop in Barcelona. Previously confined to
those who made the trek to Sant Pau d'Ordal in the Penedés
wine district, it now unleashes its beast of a wine
list right here, in the middle of town. I'm all for
choice, but 1,000 wines?
|
 |
The
list will be a slightly reduced version, and there
will be advice on hand to help you choose which
grape juice to have with the kitchen's rustic
Catalan fare. Otherwise, take my word that any
pretty-labeled plonk will be quite palatable after
the third bottle.
