The
first issue of Playboy in good condition regularly fetches
something in the region of $5,000 at auction (presumably
less if the pages are sticky). But what made their owners
take such good care of a skin mag in the first place? |
|
With
over 50,000 copies sold of that issue, the likelihood
of one becoming valuable was a pretty long shot to start
off with, especially with the imminent danger of coffee
ring stains or, ahem, giving into urges. Only looking
at the cover when Marilyn graced the centerfold must
have been like sucking candy still in its wrapper.
The odds seem better with fanzine PaperMind. Although
now on its eighth issue, editions are limited to only
100 copies, each in an A5 format plastic bag (re-sealable,
so you can have a peek without impacting the future
auction value) containing limited editions pieces from
different artists and designers. Expect flyers, paper
cuts and the unexpected.
|
|
It
may not make you a fortune, but compared to the
18% annual return that your 50 cent Playboy investment
might have yielded, a few guaranteed
smiles don’t seem too shabby.
