FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 12, 2008
What's Cooking?

I've always had grand ambitions of entertaining people - like some kind of younger and hipper Martha Stewart, whipping up cookery-book worthy Sunday dinners at home. It really is the ultimate show-off of one's forward-planning skills.

Of course, come Sunday, all I'll have in the fridge will be a flat bottle of cava and two eggs ready to hatch. Hunger never saw bad bread, they say. But rather than test that theory, I've learnt to rely on Paco Guzmán, El Bulli-alumnus and patron of gastro-tapas joint Santa Maria.

At his second restaurant, called simply Santa, the 'Nothing in the Fridge' Sunday menu of just EUR 20 offers the perfect alternative to Telepizza. The minimalist interior may be by Alfons Tost (also responsible for Espai Sucre, Comerç 24 and Monvínic) but the atmosphere is comfortably laid back and the space large enough for groups.

Book a table on the cosier second floor, and act out your hostess fantasies right there. The only planning required for this is a mere phone call. That even I can manage.

NEW IN UJ LONDON

Trans-Atlantic Sister, As She Lives & Breathes The economy is imploding. The summer is over. Cheap flights are dead. And the world's about to end (and at the hands of the Swiss too: who ever saw that one coming?). But it's not all bad..

Eating New York in 28 Days This summer I did a house-swap with a New York food writer. Relocating from Clerkenwell to Queens, I arrived with a clear mission on my hands: To eat and drink my way through New York in 4 weeks.
