Just back from the White Isle where living it up at the W Hotels and Burn Studios’ DJ Lab programme (more on that later, but we had an amazing time!) got us right into Ibiza mode and now, well, we're already booking our next trip. Like most Ibiza old hands we usually steer clear of the high season (crowds, prices, availability) but, it has to be said, there is something undeniably special about being out there in the thick of it – this won’t be our last August visit. So get your tickets booked and peruse UJ’s timely island picks from our partners on the ground, another podcast from Marcello the Great and an extended Q&A with Serena from Deliciously Sorted. Enjoy!

Addicted to Ibiza’s White Isle Gem – La Brasa
The best steak and BBQ in Ibiza Town
“Sometimes you just really need red meat, but if you’re trapped in the more touristy parts of Ibiza Town and can’t make the trek to Balafia or Can Caus, your quest for a proper steak may feel like a lost cause. There is hope in sight. Hidden just a block away from the harbour craziness is a laidback garden restaurant called La Brasa. Offering an amazing BBQ and perfectly cooked steaks, you can dine outdoors in their romantically lit tree-covered terrace, without an über-club parade in sight.”

Take Two – Ibiza Rocks House at Pikes and Ushuaïa Ibiza Beach Hotel |
Take One – Peace at Pikes |
Take Two – Party at Ushuaïa |
So, the Ibiza Rocks renovation of Pikes wasn’t that substantial, but we didn’t expect it to be. The house that Tony built (with his own hands, no less) has been given a polish with subtle décor additions and an injection of life, which is exactly what was needed. Expect more people (last week we had Oakey in the room to our left and Example and his boys in the room to our right, as well as a New York Times journo and a Vegas big wig), Ibiza Rocks VIP afterparties in the Freddie Mercury room, the same great staff and, of course, Tony. Plus, its remote location and calibre of clientele means that this is a peaceful but fun getaway and truly a home away from home. To put it bluntly, we’re big fans! So pull up a stool and tuck in.
We loved the Ushuaïa Ibiza Beach Hotel opening in May but, to be honest, we were left wondering: “With 3,000 people fist-pumping round the hotel pool how could you actually stay here?” Well, last week we gave it a go and guess what? We get it. Parties don’t start until 5pm and they end at midnight. Then there’s regular appearances by Swedish House Mafia and Luciano (watch it all from your balcony’s hot tub), luxe suites and beach club out back. Pretty good, no? The overhead planes add a bit of old skool energy (RIP Space terrace) and the tables by the pool (for the parties), especially on the Pacha side, are well serviced. Don’t leave the hotel and you could forget you’re on Playa D’En Bossa altogether! For a few days this is easy-luxe partying.

NEW on Ibiza – Giri Café
One of Ibiza’s favourite Agroturimsos, The Giri Residence opens a café |
If you’re a fan of The Giri Residence – we are; five chic suites of tranquil bliss – then you’ll probably love their new café. Located close to the namesake residence in the UJ fave town of San Juan, the café shares the same intimate-stylish atmosphere (think dinner party at a friend’s house), while serving up some serious top tier foodie treats. The Argentine chef has double–Michelin experience with restaurants of the El Bulli calibre. With a ‘Modern Med’ menu, which utilises seasonal and organic fare, and a cocktail menu inspired by the island, The Giri Café is a 2011 must.

Q&A – Serena Cook |
UJ speaks to Serena Cook about her favourite Ibiza spots
What’s your favourite restaurant in Ibiza and why?
Es Torrent does the best fish in the Balearics. The John Dory baked in the oven is to die for and with its own private beach it is an exquisite destination for the archetypal rosé lunch.
