UJ Ibiza: July |
Another year, another Ibiza season. Kicking off at an action packed IMS, this summer has already started stronger than ever. There’s something of a London vibe in the air too. Groucho (as you know by now) has a pop up going into Sa Talaia from August 16-28, Boujis and Love Brunch are both putting on parties, Shoreditch’s pooldisco has launched an already successful Saturday party at Ushuaïa, and there are still grumblings about something from the Brompton Brands. There’s also been a bit of a spotlight on San An - in a good way - with the first year of the 123 festival closing yesterday, the recent launch of the Ocean Beach Club and, of course, the not-new-but-always-hot pre-parties at Café Mambo. In other news, we’ve heard great reports of Sushiya in the port and are excited for the Jamie Jones residency launch tomorrow night at DC10. And lastly, if you see Kaz on the white isle this weekend, wish him a happy birthday!
See you on the dance floor.

UJ Guide Highlight - Fish Shack |
A recent addition to our guide
The Fish Shack may be the tip on every insider’s lips and for good reason.
To get there, head for the restaurant Sa Punta in Talamanca and, when you reach it, keep going. Over rocks. Drive with knowing confidence, and soon you will see the umbrella canopy. A simple shack (it looks like a chiringuito concession) on the rocks, the Fish Shack serves some of the finest - if not the finest - fish around. |

Maya’s View - 24 hours in Formentera |
Maya Claughton, author of Vogue's Ibiza Blog, on why you should spend a night on Formentera
Too many people only see Playa Illetes and there’s a whole island out there. Book a night in Miami-meets-driftwood spa haven Es Mares, hire a 125cc motorbike and ride from one lighthouse to the next. Explore the villages en route, stopping for a bocadillo and a caña at roadside bar Gran Iberico in Es Pujols. Then ride across the salt flats with the wind in your hair, see the light change as the day passes, and watch the sun set from Cap de Barbaria. You’re closer to Africa here than anywhere else in the Balearics.

Ralph’s Roundup - The Ibiza 2012 Lowdown |
Our man about town and all round music sage gives us his round up of Ibiza so far, as well as three tracks on his radar from the white isle
If there’s one thing that sums up Ibiza 2.012, it’s that no-one - and I mean NO-ONE - is being backwards about going forwards. Some have called this season ‘The Year Of Change’ (myself among them) and, to a degree, that’s never been more true than it is this summer. Tiësto moving to Pacha (who would have ever thunk it), Marco Carola leaving his home at Cocoon for a Friday night residency at the same club, the Swedes departing Pacha and announcing that their current run of shows would be their last (cough! Phil Collins springs to mind): all these and more have been key changes on the landscape since the season started. Meanwhile, over at DC10, the line-ups are more on point than ever. On June 25, that line-up included Seth Troxler, Jamie Jones, Davide Squillace, Maceo Plex, Ryan Crosson, Tale of Us, Lee Curtis and DJ W!ld: that’s pretty much pitch perfect. As a testing ground, Circo Loco clearly can’t be beat.
Of course, the island’s biggest and brightest techno party, Cocoon, has already been discussed in detail all over the land. The departure of Marco and Richie starting his own night at Space has been the subject of much conjecture, but as ever they’ve evolved with panache, inviting Maya Jane Coles and Seth Troxler to play at Amnesia, the latter of whom was described as ‘extraordinary’ by one onlooker. And while the opening party wasn’t quite as on point as expected (it was the same story in 2011), Week 2 saw Sven and crew take the party back to the highest heights – just as they did last year when Jamie Jones made his debut on the terrace. I guess it takes everyone a week to settle in but, by Week 3, even Ricardo had found his feet again. One thing is clear: at its best, the dream team of Sven and Ricardo with Richie or Dice is THE best place to be in the world on a Monday night.
Elsewhere on the island, the word is that Ibiza is bigger and busier than ever before. Recently-married island aficionado Erick Morillo had this to say: "Subliminal has been the busiest June I can remember in the last eight or nine years. We didn’t have a dip the second week; in fact, since the opening it’s been BANG ON IT! Ibiza is at an all-time high." Of course, at that level, the summer gig schedule is jam-packed so it was no surprise that Erick had to pack before playing at Pacha and then go straight from the club to the airport to catch a private plane at 7AM. The very next night he was playing a string of gigs in Brazil. Monday night resident Tiësto isn’t far behind either: he admitted that the reason his Monday residency works is because he’s so busy flitting around the globe every weekend – and even though he’s clearly more successful than almost anyone in his field, he’s still playing 200 shows a year right now. The mind boggles.
So what else do we have to look forward to? In next month’s column we’ll be reporting about the Ibiza 123 festival (key question from everyone and their mutha: how big will it be?) and Ushuaïa’s second season will dominate Ibiza and the image of the island like never before. David Guetta, Luciano, Fatboy Slim, Avicii - come September, there won’t be a superstar DJ who won’t have walked through its portals to play there. Kudos to Ushuaïa boss Yann Pissenem - love it or hate it, Ushuaïa is offering the biggest climate change on the island in a decade. Whether that’s entirely Balearic, however, is another matter altogether.
