UJ Ibiza: August |
August in Ibiza. Yes it’s high season, yes it’s crowded, but there’s something about this time of year… everyone’s there! It’s mayhem, but the good sort. We’re counting down the days ‘til we get there (join us at Pikes August 13-19), and when we do, it’s going to be all a go (with some chill, we hope). There’s the London trilogy to look forward to - Groucho opening, Love Brunch @ El Chiringuito and Boujis’ white party - Major Lazer at Ibiza Rocks (VIP us up!), new restaurants to try, old ones to visit, and a trip to Formentera to check out Beso Beach. And we haven’t even touched on the music that needs to be digested. Ralph’s top three this month has us more than ready. Can. Not. Wait.
VIVA IBIZA!

Ibiza House Rocks @ Pikes Offer |
Exclusive 20% mid-week offer from UJ’s home away from home
Here at UJ we’re big fans of Ibiza Rocks House at Pikes. This isn't your average agroturismo; this 500-year-old property is an institution. Exquisitely lavish yet relaxed and intimate, over the years many a famous face has graced this rock ‘n’ roll residence, and with good reason. It feels like a true home away from home (we’re usually room 10) with proper drinks, VIP after parties and pool service. Ibiza Rocks has given the property a few modern updates (wi-fi works!), while maintaining a strong sense of Pikes’ history and ethos. Authentically themed and encapsulating the legendary history of this amazing property, each room is unique in both style and layout. And every room tells a story… if only walls could talk.

Urban in Ibiza 4 @ Atzaró
Teenage Cancer Trust party at Groucho Ibiza |
If you haven’t been to Atzaró - this is a good excuse to check it out. Shop for art (look out for work by Steff Plaetz, BANKSY, Inkie, and Goldie), take in a fashion show, quaff some champagne and hit Aura after. It makes for a nice alternative to the usual Ibiza night.
This was one of the parties of the year last year, and with Nenah Cherry performing and Groove Armada and DJ Antz on the decks, this is sure to be a goodie. £80,000 was raised last year and they’re hoping to top that this time. |

Urban in Ibiza 4, 7PM- 1AM. Aura afterparty, 1AM-4AM. Exhibition on until August 31.

Boujis White Party
You’ll know by now that Groucho is setting up a pop up in Sa Talaia, so this is just a friendly reminder that if you’d like to go, and aren’t a member, you’ll need to apply for temporary Ibiza membership now. There are special events for the duration - see Polpo club dinner on the 22nd and Oakie djing on the 23rd - as well as a Groucho restaurant and cocktail bar. The question is, will they have twiglets?
One of our favourite Ibiza parties of all time was the Boujis party at Sol D’en Serra (now called Amante) so our ears always perk up when we hear it’s that time again… This year it’s a white theme and the location is still under wraps, but you can expect the usual good tunes (Rob Marmot, DAX and Sam Young all in attendance), a ticket price that includes drinks, and a magical location. Hit Love Brunch first and then head to Boujis - London b2b!

THE NEW GIRI CAFÉ GARDEN
With 2012’s addition of a breezy new garden, The Giri Café just got hotter.
The Giri Café is an extension of San Joan’s eye-poppingly stylish boutique hotel, The Giri Residence, and is every bit as chic as its namesake. Fusing a slick Scandi aesthetic with deeply Moroccan maximalism, the restaurant is a style traveller’s dream. But just a pretty face, this is not. Inside, the smoky glass-topped bar provides the perfect perch for nursing a winter Martini. In the sultry heat of August though, you’ll find Ibiza’s chicest dining al fresco in the new herb-scented garden.
Having cooked all over the world, from Asia to Brasil, head chef Xavier Doménech Moreno’s style is laidback yet luxe, giving local ingredients an unexpected twist and creating a menu that’s as well-travelled as the clientele. The Giri Café would be a stand-out in New York or São Paolo - to find it here in Ibiza is a dream.

Ralph’s Roundup - The Ibiza 2012 Lowdown |
Man about town and all round music sage, Ralph gives us his round up of Ibiza so far, as well as the three white isle tracks on his radar
Let’s start at the very top, in every sense of the word. The month of July started with the three-day Ibiza 123 festival, which saw Sting, Elton John and Lenny Kravitz perform on our favourite Spanish isle for the first time. With a well-oiled machine behind it, there was never any question of 123 falling apart - but there’s no doubt that the numbers weren’t quite as high as had initially been expected. Situated next to Café Mambo in San Antonio, the supporting cast was almost as strong as the headliners themselves, with M83, T.E.E.D. and Azari & III all bringing the noise before the main event.
Aside from the numbers, two things need to be said that probably won’t be said elsewhere: one, Elton John, introduced by Pete Tong, took to the stage with a spine-tingling solo set (that included ‘Tiny Dancer’ and ‘Rocket Man’) that then melded perfectly with Pnau for a triumphant 45 minute electronic wig-out. (And as I write this, it’s just been announced that the parent album, ‘Good Morning To The Night’, has gone to number 1 in the UK, Elt’s first chart topper in two decades.)
Two, Lenny Kravitz gave the most emphatic, electric live performance we’ve witnessed in many a moon. Taking in tracks new and old (‘Believe’, ‘It Ain’t Over Til It’s Over’ and ‘Fly Away’ among them), he was joined by longtime bassist Gail Ann Dorsey and guitarist Craig Ross, causing a complete riot when he closed proceedings with ‘Are You Gonna Go My Way’). Looking and sounding every inch the rock god at 48, he not only seemed elated to be there, he’s seemingly impervious to aging to boot. For the encore, he brought on Cadenza head honcho Luciano for a new version of ‘I Belong To You’, aided and abetted by Lenny’s expert sax man Harold Todd, and a looped version of 'R.A.W. - Atamga', from Luciano’s Vagabundos mix.
Even more intriguing is the news that an album from the duo is also on the cards. “When I met Lenny I was a bit nervous because he’s Lenny Kravitz!” Luciano told me a few days before the show. “I was really surprised that [even though] everybody had an idea of the person, he’s extremely humble and easygoing.” Judging by the first fruits of the collaboration - watched in the audience by a duly impressed - we can’t wait to hear what happens next.
Elsewhere on the island, the new parties have started to pop, with Jamie Jones’ Thursday night soirée at DC10 pulling a crowd that’s mainly British but with a healthy smattering of Spanish hedonists, not to mention the best-dressed dancers on the island. Marco Carola’s new night Music On has also started at Amnesia on Friday nights, with one onlooker reporting that the party is already packed and - as expected - full of Italians.
But the party on everyone’s lips is Richie Hawtin’s new night ENTER. at Space. Not only is everyone buzzing about the best new party to arrive at Space in many a moon, it’s a mix of high concept and simple tectonic thrills that last until seven in the morning. It’s also proof that you don’t need to have a billboard that looks like a supermarket sign to pull a proper crowd. By paying attention to the things that matter, ENTER. is proof that there’s room on the island for another quality electronic party that doesn’t rely on big name pop guests or fireworks, literal or otherwise. "People are so impressed with the attention to redesigning Space," says Ben Turner, Hawtin’s manager, "and the saki bar has been a huge hit. Rich has found his home… that room is made for him. He’s played three sets there and nailed it every time!" Little wonder, then, that Sven, Pete Tong and Luciano have all been down to check it out.
Next month we return to the Ibiza frontline with a packed August diary that takes in DC10, Pacha and Paradise alike… see you there!
