UJ Ibiza: September |
It’s September, meaning there’s only really one more month to get to the white isle, if you want to hit the clubs that is. For many, this is the best month - fewer people, less expensive, more space, and closing parties. So if you haven’t been, you haven’t missed the season yet! And if you’re thinking of closing parties, go on, next May is a long time away. As this is our last Ibiza newsletter (although expect a final round up from Ralph), we’d like to bid the season adieu and send a special thanks to all of our Ibiza partners, in London and on the white isle.
See you at the closings.

Two Door Cinema Club at Ibiza Rocks |

You know the drill: disco dancing around a pool with trannies. Add that to Severino on the decks (check out his mix here) and OTT shows, and this truly is one of the more fun parties on the island. So get there early and stay ‘til they kick you out. Then make like a local and head to Privilege for ElRow.

Love Bruch Ibiza @ El Chiringuito and Boujis Blanco
sponsored by Belvedere and Moët & Chandon
It was always going to be a tall order - Love Brunch followed by a Boujis party - but the Junkies and Team Moët & Chandon pulled it off with aplomb. First up was Love Brunch for West London by the sea’s daytime fiesta. Magnums of rosé to accompany the delicious multi-course lunch kicked off the proceedings, which slowly moved into Belve and daytime dancing. So fun. After a quick disco nap and dinner, we made our way to S’Estanyol for Boujis Blanco, where we danced the night away in the sand. There were more magnums than you could shake a stick at, whisperings of a Belve Bear and a very glamorous white-clad crowd (with Dita and Fiona leading the way). We can’t wait to do it again next year.

Maya’s View |

Maya Claughton, author of Vogue’s Ibiza Blog, on Atzaró's new beach club
Atzaró Beach
We’ve come to expect great things from island fave Agroturismo Atzaró, where the rooms are posh, the parties are HOT and the spa is next-level. No surprise then, that their 2012 takeover of tranquil Cala Nova beach club ZenSea has been such a hit. Occupying prime position (breezy, elevated, dramatic) on the coastline, Atzaró Beach takes in three different spaces - the restaurant, the beach itself and the über-chilled chiringuito.
Cala Nova is divine - a wide swathe of white sand with Formentera-esque water and optional surfers. Its proximity to Es Cana has tarred it with a somewhat budget brush over the last decade, but thanks to a whole host of hotties popping up, the area is 100% in the ascendant. We love the plush white beds, the Atzaró Surfer Burger and, most of all, Jade Jagger's weekly 1971 parties - Groove Armada, lobster tacos, and a whole heap of disco. So hot it hurts.

Mamboats
Mambo brothers (Mambros) know parties, and they also know boats! Check out their facebook page to see boating options. Highlights include their very reasonable Celebrity Cruise (drinks, Es Vedra, Juan y Andrea and snorkelling), and their mix and match scheme, meaning you can share the boat with others wanting the same bespoke experience if you aren’t with a group. Expect the same good times that Mambo provides on shore on the water. And make sure you stop in for a pre-party after your day at sea. Hierbas!

Ralph’s Round up - The Ibiza 2012 Lowdown |
Man about town and all round music sage, Ralph gives us his round up of Ibiza so far, as well as the three white isle tracks on his radar
Ibiza in August is like that big building in Regent's Park with all the animals in: a bit of a zoo. Not only does Radio 1 Weekend loom large, it's also the month that Miami, New York and clubbers of Italian descent decide to descend on the island. So it's no surprise to see P. Diddy at Marco Carola's new (and packed) Music On party at Amnesia with Guy Gerber, or indeed three days later at Circo Loco @ DC10 with Felix Da Housecat, R 'n' B songstress Cassie and production legend Nellee Hooper in tow. The line-up at Circo Loco that day was suitably next level too: Maceo Plex, Seth Troxler, DJ W!ld and Carl Craig and (the other, more underground) Cassy all played amazing music inside and out – although I'm not sure if anyone could beat Cassy dropping 'Be Yourself' by Celeda around 1am on a packed terrace. It suddenly brought back memories of seeing Tenaglia himself spin a surprise set in the same place back in 2000… although on that occasion, there were only around 200 people there.
From there it was a hop, skip and drive over to Amnesia for peak season Cocoon. And while their season started a little slower than usual, this was easily the most fun I've had at the club all summer: Ricardo on fire on the terrace and Sven happily making mischief in the main room until the sun came up. To sum up the moment, he closed with 'Music Sounds Better With You' by Stardust: good times. Then it was over to La Salla Rossa for Ricardo and 3pm via The Kave. Needless to say, Diddy was still representing and, inside, Seth Troxler and Craig Richards were playing back to back. Only one bouncer was left standing! Afterwards, it was back to Salla Rossa for one of Sven's infamous after-hour sets. It's a great spot and the best place to catch Sven up close and personal in a place and space he always excels in. The music veered from mad techno (KiNK – 'Existence') to cosmic goodness (Todd Terje – 'Inspector Norse') – and best of all, everyone with the right wristband (from the night before) got in for zero pesetas. That's something to cherish in Ibiza 2.012: elsewhere on the island (and in the wider world), very little hasn't been quantified these days. And a beer was a mere €5! From there, it was over to Plastik Beach to check out Dyed Soundorom with Cassy, Behrouz and Seth Troxler, who recounted tales of the VQ takeover at DC10 the previous week. Those who were present (quite a lot of you by all accounts) were amazed by the mazes and general magic. Don't be surprised if you see more of this from VQ at the club next year.
The next day started pretty well too: lunch at Fish Shack with Carl Craig (to talk through music and concepts for his forthcoming Mixmag cover and CD) while over in the other corner, Richie Hawtin was deep in conversation with his agent. Two hours later, the pair were reunited for a swimming pool promo video where the two techno legends got to show their silly side. More of that please. But on a more serious note, ENTER. has been one of the biggest success stories of the season, with fast-rising electronic star Grimes performing live at Space in August and Richie returning to Cocoon at the end of the month, where he and Sven took over the terrace. The times may be changing but strong friendships aren't dented when both parties are happy to moonlight for each other. Sven returned the compliment the week after.
Then it was time for the biggest/silliest social event of the week: the first ever Diddy party in Ibiza. Some people clearly thought it was a white party but our group didn't get that memo and neither did James Blunt, Guy Gerber or Lady Victoria Hervey, who drank and danced (dressed in black) to music from Kate Elsworth, DC10 resident Davide Squillace and outstanding newcomer Mendoza until it was time to hit Pacha for a packed Subliminal with Erick Morillo, Sunnery James and Ryan Marciano. Since then, Diddy has posted a two minute video called – yep! – Ibiza. But wherever you stand (and no one is sitting), there's no doubt that Ibiza remains the number one clubbing destination in the world during the summer. Cream is busier than ever, Ushuaïa is a bona fide smash and there are more parties than ever – and even in San Antonio, no one's complaining. Kudos to Paradise, Never Say Never and Zoo Project for keeping the prices down for the newer recruits too. And on that animal-related note, more news from the Ibiza (lion) trail next month.
