Well, the year of change is now in full swing… and you know what? It's looking great! Half of London cleared out last night for the Departures launch at Ushuaïa today – we're excited to hear the verdict – and after another secret gig from Richie Hawtin at Sonar (in Parc de la Ciutadella, he also played a surprise set at the RA rooftop party), an element of 'surprise' is definitely on the cards this year. In other news, it's Pacha's 40th bday! Happy Birthday Pacha, here's to 40 (+) more.
See you on the white isle.

A stellar lineup and residencies – think Kaz James, Pete Tong; it's even rumoured Manumission will be staging a comeback – kick off soon, but until then, Bomba is collaborating with Sankeys to host Defected in the House in the Sankeys LAB twice this month. We weren't sure about Nikki Beach either, but the new Ibiza outpost is set to be different from its Marbella and Magaluf counterparts – and given its location in Santa Eulalia, we have high hopes that this is true. |

"Are we in? The ceremony is about to begin!" So said the assumed-to-be-immortal Jim Morrison at the start of 'Celebration of the Lizard', a phrase that's been revived, repeated and recycled by party people ever since. In May 2013, it came back with a double whammy, as Ibiza opened its doors to the world once again and Doors keyboard player Ray Manzarek passed away after a long battle with cancer.
One person who felt the passing considerably was IMS Legends inductee Norman Cook, who sampled Jim on his 2000 single 'Bird of Prey'. Norm, who played two shows on the island in May (at Dalt Vila and Cipriani), is one of the many A-list DJs who will be moonlighting across Ibiza this summer, with gigs at Ushuaïa for Pete Tong, and alongside his Brighton and Horsham buddy Carl Cox at Space later in the season. Variety remains the spice of life.
In fact, a quick scan across this season's line-ups suggests that moonlighting is just as important as a solid residency in Ibiza, particularly in the techno community. Carl Cox is playing at Amnesia for Music: On, Loco Dice is playing three shows for Cocoon as well as taking on his own Ibiza residency at Ushuaïa called Used + Abused, Seth Troxler is playing for Carl Cox, at DC10 and Cocoon, and Richie Hawtin's second season at Space for ENTER. still makes room for a sneaky Amnesia appearance on August 19. If anything, this jumping about is good news for punters, club and promoters alike, as a strangulated scene that denies cross club pollination due to "island politics" is not only boring, but outdated.
In the meantime, here are the parties you need in your life this summer and the dates where the line-ups truly sizzle.
Solomun+1, Pacha
This is the hottest new night on the Pacha calendar – and with good reason. The line-ups are strong, the visuals are stunning and it's the best representation of house music imaginable. Take your pick in July from Mladen and special guest Tensnake (14th), Ame (21st) and DJ Koze (28th).
Cocoon, Amnesia
With the line-ups going back to basics – there's no theme this year, it's all about the essence – look out for Sven and Seth Troxler on the terrace (the latter's return is on June 24). If you're on the island, don't miss out. And if you're (still) there in August, Richie's return to Cocoon on the 19th will also be worth every single, um, cent of your entry fee.
Le Grand Bazaar
N*E*R*D main-man Pharrell Williams has been announced as a special guest at Le Grand Bazaar at Ushuaïa for Pete Tong's brand new outdoor Ibiza party on July 5. Probably the biggest hip-hop coup on the island this season.
ENTER.
The 2013 line-ups for Hawtin's ENTER. party are both delicious and well-balanced, with guests including Damian Lazarus on July 11, Jamie Jones on August 8 and Maya Jane Coles on September 19. Shots and techno guaranteed!
Bugged Out! Presents Skreamizm (London) at Sankeys
On July 20, the line-up is pretty wonderful: Skream with Duke Dumont, Route 94 and Anthony Rother. A disco dream, this one will be a roadblock!
Diynamic at Sankeys
On July 30, the line-up is Solomun, H.O.S.H, David August, Stimming and Kollektiv Turmstrasse. For fans of amazing Hamburg house, this is the one!
Wisdom Of The Glove
Another hot new night at Pacha, this one's notable for bringing Four Tet live to the island for the first time. After Chromatics LIVE a couple of weeks back, this is arguably Wisdom's biggest coup of the summer. July 31.
Circo Loco at DC10 closing
The opening – with Soul Capsule, Mano Le Tough, Appolonia and Kerri Chandler – was amazing fun. While the line-up for closing hasn't been announced and won't be announced until much closer to the time, if you're still on the island in October, the DC Closing is not to be missed! A date for the diary: Monday October 7. |
