It's fair to say that in today's wasteland of identikit bars and clubs it's nigh on impossible to find a truly organic music scene. It's also a reasonable claim to say that SE8 has never been a hotbed of private members clubs. |

But behind an unassuming doorway, a stones throw from Deptford Broadway, lives Bubblegum. Formerly the Deptford Conservatives' club and a lifetime patron of the Derrick Trotter school of interior design, Bubblegum has for a long time been the closely guarded secret of a handful of local promoters and students from the nearby Goldsmiths College. Now those students have all grown up and run successful record labels of their own, but they, along with an ever ready cast of South London talent, still find time to regularly pack out the 150 capacity club with friends, savvy students and those in the know. Bubblegum's only hangover from its shadowy political past is that you are required to sign in on entrance. This, for those concerned with uptown image rather than underground kudos, technically makes it a private members club. Which, when combined with the possibility of rubbing shoulders with the next Damien Hirst whilst dancing to the next Zombie Disco, isn't bad for a fiver. |
