Shaking

Wondering where all those Tex Mex restos of yesteryear had disappeared to? Nostalgic for those so-kitsch-it-hurts novelty maracas and faded El Paso ads? Pining for a nought percent agave tequila cocktail?

Thought not.

The TGI Fridays of the Latin food scene - the Tex Mex concept - proved about as welcome in the nineties as a stray rucksack in the noughties. But now Latino restaurateurs have counter-attacked with establishments that are slicker and healthier with injected flair.

Anyone caught up in the Nuevo Latino revolution of the moment should head to Mestizo. Its exceptionality doesn't just lie in being the only culinary destination of note in the gastronomic desert that is the Euston/Kings Cross locale, but also in its endorsement as being the only authentic Mexican eatery in the capital. Insiders whisper that this is where the embassy sends its visiting nationals.

The interiors are polished, the clientele diverse and the menu affordable, whilst boasting innovative dishes that will be previously unknown to most. Art lovers should also note that for the duration of the Tate Modern exhibition there's a dedicated Frida menu, featuring the artist's favourite dishes.

Waiter, waiter, there's a monobrow in my soup!
