Mike Leigh and the National. Now there's an interesting combination. A man who takes risks and a theatre that will probably let him. |

As you most-likely know, Leigh was commissioned by the National to create a play - and it was thought to be the first ever play with no name, no prior press interviews and (hitherto) no subject matter. Now titled Two Thousand Years, the play has already sold out for its entire four month run at the National Theatre (apart from a small number of tickets that will be released daily). Not since the halcyon days of The Phantom of the Opera in the 80s has there been so much excitement surrounding a single Theatreland show. Much of this is, of course, driven by the legendary reputation of Leigh and the rest, from the serious hype created around this show. (The play, formerly known as the Play With No Name, and still known as the Play With No Plot, and now also as the Play That's Been Delayed... Come on!) A bit of a PR scam? Mais oui. But did they get us? Most
definitely. |
