Who fancies a spit roast? Now I've got your attention, I can tell you about the new restaurant, Roast. Brought to you by Iqbal Wahhab (owner of Cinnamon Club), the emphasis is traditional British food, sourced from small local suppliers. |

With a market stall theme interior (featuring large displays of seafood on ice, breads and cheeses) and an emphasis on seasonal produce, Roast's very in-keeping with the market ethos; which is more than I can say for the other soon-to be in Boroughs, including Wagamama (nooooo!) and Patisserie Valerie (less offensive, but people better still buy from the plum tart man!). Ironically there have never been that many decent places to eat near the food market, apart from Tapas Brindisi, but if you need a change from little plates of Spanish nibbles, then Head Cook Lawrence Keogh (The Avenue and Bluebird) should do the trick. His menu will offer a hearty selection of British cooking from pies and puddings through to seafood, lighter grills and salads. However, the highlight of the kitchen, literally, is the aforementioned large spit oven in which suckling pigs, birds and ribs of beef will be rotated each day. Which should prove that you don’t have to save your weekly roast till the Sabbath. |
