Politically speaking, if West is blue, South is red and North is yellow, then East is, undoubtedly, green. (And who can blame 'em; I wouldn't fancy sampling emissions a la carte for breakfast each day, either.) |

Discerning ethical eaters can sample the wares at Fifteen (as if further clarification of the vert impact were needed, Jamie Oliver has just announced that he's putting his minions on pot-counselling programmes), the Hoxton Apprentice, and now the latest 'friendly' restaurant, Canteen. Situated on Spitalfields (which seems to be developing by the day!), Canteen uses only nationally sourced produce (still on organic? Do catch up, dear). The interior boasts a canopied glass roof, entirely bespoke furniture and booths and bench-style seating. The menu is modern trad British - think potted duck with parsley, gingerbread with quinces and devilled kidneys on toast (hmmm). Everything is made from scratch, the staff are re-skilled, the quality is second to none and the pricing reasonable. A democratic space that's been inspired by eating houses, libraries and schools, we're finding it typically rebel London that, just as its USP for multi-culturalism has been coined, the zeitgeist should go all patriotic on us. But then if trend wasn't a capricious creature then it probably wouldn't exist.
