With all the hype around these days, it's nice to hear about something that delivers on its promise. Village East comes from the founders of a UJ fave, The Garrison. Set in the heart of a thriving creative community, it ticks just about every box going. |

Set within a listed warehouse and a contrasting glass apartment block, it's sympathetic to its surrounds, in a sustainable development, with an accomplished team behind it and a beautifully thought-out menu. The chef, who's served time at the feted Balham Bar and Kitchen, Mirabelle and Pied a Terre, offers a range of carefully crafted dishes - from deep-fried soft shell crab with watermelon and wasabi sauce, to sautéed foie gras with miso and chateaubriand and grilled lobster and chips. Eames-inspired seating, deep banquettes and salvaged, reworked school furniture are set against a backdrop of industrial Scandi minimalism. Crafted from concrete, timber, brick, steel and white fire clay that will wear over time to give a different, more distressed appeal, the interiors might wear, but we think it's safe to say that the locale won't tire of this venue that looks set to put Bermondsey on the London hospitality map.
