Now in its 15th year, GFW has upped the
ante and the prize for the best collection is £20,000 - thanks
to sponsors River Island. Here, UJ previews three Next Big Things.
Lizzie Burns, Ravensbourne
The 22 year-old has already packed a lot into her fashion career. While
working with Fee Doran for Mrs Jones, jobs included making outfits for
the Scissor Sisters to wear at The Brits and Live8, as well as designing
for Basement Jaxx and Halifax (the bank). Lizzie ran a stall on Portobello
market and pattern cut for Tristan Webber. Her collection is inspired
by Greek goddess, Athena - ideal for warrior princesses.
Ihiro Suzuki, London College
Of Fashion
It's a while since Scottish tweed and tartan have made an impact on
the style radar, but Ihiro Suziki has called his graduate collection
The Tweed Issimo, dedicating his seven looks to manipulation of the
fabric through washing and patchwork. Learning his skills at Aquascutum,
Ihiro is eager to enter the fashion arena and embark on his own-name
label.
Eva Alberici, Northumbria University
Eva's designs are inspired by 1920's shapes and prints by William Morris
and Celia Birtwell - who, thanks to Topshop is currently having a fashion
moment. The collection mixes freehand prints in earthy moss green and
bronze with floaty dresses and tunics. With work experience at Boudicca
already on her CV, you can see where the 24 year-old gets her fashion
nose.
