The modus operandi of a new generation of restauranteur seems to be to take over an area by setting up something really successful and then opening something totally different nearby (which is also then very successful).

It's not that we mind, on the contrary it can be positively entertaining, but we didn't want anyone to think we hadn't noticed. In Notting Hill, Tom Conran has the holy trinity of The Cow, Tom's Deli and Lucky 7 (and Crazy Homies to round it off), while over in Bermondsey duo Adam White and Clive Watson hold court with The Garrison and Village East. But in Shoreditch, for new opener Hawksmoor, the team (Will Beckett and Huw Gott) that brought us Mexican at the nearby Green & Red, The Redchurch Café & Bar and The Marquess Tavern, appears to have not only colonised Shoreditch, but skipped over the border from Mexico to the US to do so. This latest incarnation is a hearty steakhouse with the bonus of damn fine cocktails. So what's next? An Argentinean grill on Hoxton Square? Or a 20s bootleg gin joint on the High Street? Quite appropriate for this modern restaurant team with the Midas touch.
