Camden Chic
Boot it to Camden

Ah, Camden. The sights, the sounds, the throngs of people traipsing around grotty market stalls. It's not the first place in London that springs to mind for gastrophiles and bon viveurs in search of something a bit special. Or is it finally, really this time, about to change?

The epic Gilgamesh, which most swore would only last five minutes, is doing very nicely, thank you, with a certain type of clientele who fancy a bit of WAG glamour or are tempted by Mr Pengelley's eight-course taster menu on Monday nights, and At Proud, the well-known gallery's buzzing bar, has drawn a devoted following since opening last summer.

Next up, with a little help from Camden Council, it looks like Inverness Street is about to follow suit and shed its grungey image. The home of indie-band boozer The Good Mixer and, more recently, one of the best non chain burger restaurants in London, Haché, the street is currently undergoing a £4 million redevelopment which will see it cobbled and spruced up nicely by early next year. The perfect time then for the long-standing Bar Solo to change its name to, simply, Solo, and jazz up its own image.

Once a more underground music venue and brasserie, Solo is upping the ante further by introducing a new improved menu - the steak I had there recently was the best I've tasted in a long time - in the bohemian-chic ground floor restaurant, while Under Solo, the downstairs bar, has been smartened up, too, in time for an even more rocking live music programme, including Karaoke Unplugged which will give revellers the chance to sing with the stars (Amy Winehouse and Graham Coxon are both friends of Solo). Camden here we come!
