They've gained notoriety, as much for their beery braggadochio, as for their Madchester-inspired melodies and baggy beats, and their debut album has been one of the year's most anticipated releases. But while the band wear their rogueish influences proudly on their tracksuit sleeve, what's most surprising is that a real emotional heart beats beneath the hoodie. The opening track 'Ice cream sundae' invokes the Stone Roses in their full pomp, all jangling guitars, dreamy vocals and pounding drums. 'Two Lovers' is melancholic and heart-swelling at the same time, with a dramatic crescendo that Morrissey would be proud of, while the latest single 'Either Way' [released on 21/05] is both sincerely confessional and truly anthemic - no mean feat. The album stumbles, however, when it's overtly laddy: 'Loosely Dancing'
is like a Mondays track without the humour; while 'The Neighbour' is
a chav call to arms in the crudest sense. |

At times, Love It When I feel Like This is both sluggish and overtly thuggish. Yet these asbo-rockers are just as capable of hitting you in the gut with genuine soul as with a bottle of Stella. The Twang:
