Latin music with added bounce... The Big Apple has always been a melting pot of musical and cultural reinvention. It’s the city which gave birth to disco, hip hop and punk funk after all. Less obvious though is its massive contribution to Latin music. |

Whilst Greenwich Village was raving about a young folk singer named Dylan, Spanish Harlem and the Bronx was ringing with the sound of Latin American immigrant musicians remoulding the music of their homelands by mixing up styles, coming up with boogaloo, salsa and Latin soul. At the epicentre of this creativity was the Fania record label founded in 1964. Running for over 40 years and with the likes of Willie Colon, Tito Puente and Joe Bataan on its roster, Fania became known for its exceptional catalogue. Recently the label opened up the vaults to Gilles Peterson allowing
him to select some choice songs for the first in Fania's 'DJ Series'
compilations. Now it's the turn of UK hip-hop DJ and vinyl fanatic DJ
Format. |

As with the mix he did for Fabric's label, Format whips up a party set full of rare and classic tracks including the superb 'Be's That Way' by Willie Bobo, 'Jive Samba' by Jack Constanzo & Gerry Woo and the stonking 'Freak Off' by Orquestra Harlow. It's a heady, sweaty mix compilation made for summer. Step to it. Fania Records
