This is the 21st Century, right? We're supposed to be working with each other in the new global village by now? Well, something went awry somewhere, because everyone seems to be avoiding each other like the plague.

If you've ever stayed at Gatwick's futuristic Yotel, you'll know what I mean. Go to check-in and you'll find that on-screen prompts replace those traditional forms of interaction like - oh I don't know, talking to other human beings!

Then there's the members bars who've landed on the idea of using swipe cards to enforce their elitism. So if you want to get into The Suite at Number One Leicester Square, you have to negotiate some sort of proximity device instead of the traditional big bloke with a clipboard. RIP, the 'I'm on the member's bar guest list blag', we'll miss you!

There is one human-eliminating technology we're kind of happy to see though.

Just like Islington's The Sampler, the new Wonder Bar at Selfridges uses prepay cards and automatic wine dispensers to create a sommellier-free, self-service 'wine jukebox' that will appeal to anyone who can't walk past a Woolworths pick-n-mix section without wanting to run in and try one of everything.

And frankly, sometimes when you've been mixing your whites and our reds, the less human beings you interact with, the better!
