Zhang Huan: Ash
Artist Zhang Huan is celebrating something of  surge in international fame these days: New York's Asia Society are mounting his first retrospective, as Haunch of Venison have elected to launch their new Berlin project space with his enormous four metre tall Buddha installation. In London, meanwhile, Haunch have also deftly nabbed some of his most recent efforts for the artist's first London solo show. Shaped from incense ash collected from Shanghai temples, this latest collection of paintings and sculptures is thankfully a far cry from the earlier radical performances of bodily endurance that earned him repute, emanating instead a surprising, and surprisingly accessible air of tender, dark humanity.

Decadence, Decay and the Demimonde
Erotic, sacred, seductive yet disturbing, the inaugural exhibition from curatorial collective Austin Enterprises unveils the underbelly of excess. This group show by an array of international artists revels in the warmth of debauched intemperance, celebrating its insanity whilst warning of its power and poisonous potential. Of course, no exhibition could truly live up to such a profoundly indulgent agenda, which by its very nature suggests the limitless capacity of the human heart. And yet, this does remain a delicious attempt, and one that succeeds to both enthral and perturb, to titillate and disturb in equal measure.

Archaic News
Following the success of his first exhibition at the Adam Gallery last year, Jürgen Möbius returns to London with Archaic News, another delightful show of visual riddles and mysteries. Landscapes of lost symbols and fragmented icons float in his strange, almost childish oceans of textured colour, yet there is something intriguing beneath their apparent simplicity; something complex. Thoughtful and fascinating, his paintings unravel like fairy-tales, almost yielding their secret meanings and patterns, only to pull them away with an endearing laugh at the very last moment. In a world that can teeter so close to darkness, whether meteorologically or politically, such joys really should be welcomed.

Adam Gallery, 24 Cork Street, W1S 3NJ
