Whenever the London winter rolls around, I am always struck by the notion that this is just how the city was meant to be; that this is as good as it gets.

It's as though we reached the pinnacle of wintry misery back in the 19th century, and there's nowhere to go from there. If you listen carefully between the gusts of bone-chilling wind, you can even make out Dickens's smothered chuckle from his Westminster grave. Smug git.

It might be ugly, cold and grey and damp, but now is actually the perfect time to embrace the London winter, and hit the streets for a wander.

For starters, you could grab a doubly chilling Jack the Ripper tour through the fog-lined streets of Whitechapel, where the gory details of his five savage murders are brought to life amidst a haze of mystery and conspiracy.

Sound too gruesome? Then how's about a beverage-led walk with mates? Karen Chester's two city pub walks are always excellent, and London Walks are hosting a couple of specifically festive pub tours.

Failing that, you could always try a cosy gastro tour. It may not exactly be 'newsworthy', but with food, drink and, if you're lucky, a few carolers, we could think of worse ways to spend the day than Celia Brooks Brown's meanders through Marylebone, Borough and Portobello markets.

The Jack the Ripper Tour runs most evenings from 7pm, costs £6.50 and requires advanced booking.
London Walks cost £6 with no need to book. Contact Big Smoke Walks and Celia Brooks Brown through their websites to organize and book any of their tours
