A new album by singer-songwriter Cat Power is always a reason to celebrate round our way. Expect this time she's more singer than sing-songwriter because for the second time in her career she has chosen to release a collection of cover versions. |

Anyone familiar with her spell-binding version of the Stones' '(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction' will know how she doesn't shy from tackling big numbers, and is capable of seismic interpretations of other people's songs. On 'Jukebox', Cat - real name Chan Marshall - gets lippy with some
intimidating wordsmiths, namely the likes of James Brown, Johnny Cash,
Bob Dylan, Jessie Mae Hemphill, Billie Holiday, Janis Joplin, Hank Williams
and Frank Sinatra whose 'New York' opens the record. |

Recorded in Memphis, Miami and Dallas, the results sing for themselves. The album shimmers with her trademark honesty but comes complete with a fuller sound as this is her first LP made with her band Dirty Delta Blues which includes Jon Spencer Blues Explosion's Judah Bauer. To sum up, Cat Power has made 2008's first musical tour de force. Cat
Power 'Jukebox' now available from Matador on amazon.co.uk
