Laughing in a Foreign Language
The Dutch sweat carrots whilst we make like pigs, Germans squeeze their thumbs where we would cross fingers, and when we're busy frying other fish, the French are off whipping their cats. No wonder the EU has so many problems. Whether slapstick or satire, this series of films, performances, talks and exhibitions at the Southbank collates the work of 33 artists from around the globe, exploring the potential for humour to cross geographic and linguistic boundaries, beginning on Friday with the Bureau of Universal Merriment and their 13 step programme for learning to laugh in a foreign language.
Time:

Jan 25 - April 13, Various Times

Place:

Southbank Centre, Belvedere Road, SE1 8XX

Sadler's Wells Sampled
Dance can be hard to crack. Sometimes all that intense contemporary performance-art can revel too much in the avant-garde, whilst more traditional performances can lead to a severe case of snooze-itis; tango can seem too sleazy and hip-hop often too done. It is much to everyone's pleasure, then, that Sadler's Wells are reviving last year's delightful Sampled nights. A stroke of genius, these sessions are like performative tasters, offering the chance to test the proverbial waters of dance, catching practitioners from a huge array of styles and challenging such restrictive stereotypes.

Time:
Sat Jan 26 & Sun Jan 27, 7:30pm
Place:

Sadler's Wells, Rosebery Avenue, EC1R 4TN

Cost:

£5-£10

From Russia
After a little legal jiggery-pokery to get all the pieces into the country, this monumental exhibition of Russian and French artists, working between 1870 and 1925 is finally here. Examining the wealth of artistic interchange between the two countries, the 120 paintings, gathered together from four of Russia's principal galleries and museums, chart the exploration of the Realist, Impressionist and Post-Impressionist movements, and their effects on the Modernism of the dawning 20th century. With work from Matisse and Monet, Kustodiev and Kandinsky collected into a landmark anthology, the sense of cultural interchange resonates not only aesthetically, but also with our current political clime.

Time:
Jan 26 - Apr 18, 10am-6pm, Fri 10am-10pm
Place:
Royal Academy, Burlington House, W1J 0BD
Cost:
£11
