A debut collection in a new capital after success on ones home territory is always a challenge. Cristoforus Kotentos is already an established name in his native Greece and has been working to have a solid base before venturing forth into the global market.
His show entitled "Queens at War" demonstrated a slick professional approach to catwalk with a tightly controlled theme, silhouette and style. Perhaps a little toooo tightly controlled - since the palette of silver, gunmetal, pewter, steel, and black was only relieved with a few brief moments of a warm taupe. The strict adherence to the "story" and image of the collection was in danger of obscuring some superb construction of banding, seaming and overlaying; combined with strong drapery. It is only to be hoped that a designer from the classical heritage of Greece would be strong on drape but this designer used it in totally creative ways allied to structure.
Some more volume based pieces demonstrated a strong understanding of fabric without swamping the wearer and even a the cocoon shaped coats had a great feel to them as wearable pieces if just simply worn with jeans!
There was for this observer one stand out dress with a jersey drape front ascending into an extended hood - great piece and very sexy.
So overall an interesting and polished debut for winter 2008, lets watch for future developments.
