Even if you didn't read or know that designer jacqui Demkin originally started life as a designer in Australia there was something strongly West Coast/ Sydneyesque about the relaxed feminine pieces on display in her catwalk collection. The "vibe" of style with an easy attitude, a life lived with throw away class. Touches of fellow Australian designer Colette Dinnigan showed in the delicate lace and embroidery but this was still a strongly personal vision of style for Winter 2008 with neat Baby Doll coats with six high placed buttons, a trench coatdress in thunder grey or a combination of a skinny caramel leather jacket and a gold sequined cardigan layer worn with a frisky cream skirt. The collection felt like an ideal wardrobe for a rather groomed rock chick with its flirting with floral chiffons, the hint of Goth black chiffons and the leather jackets which had the nonchalance of cardigans.
The pieces were commercial yet somehow innovative in that there were no fussy details and the designer had focused on what was really worthwhile rather than throwing too many ideas, accessories of pieces at the statement. Verdict? a success this season but now show us where you move to next!
