So maybe a dress costs as much
as a studio flat (on Park Lane). And only, like, three women buy it. Couture
is like the Superbowl of fashion; a kind of sartorial Olympics. A lot of pomp and preening for sure, but without it, the fashion industry wouldn’t be the same. Photo: (c) 2003 Christopher Moore Ltd |

Disappointingly, this
season, the Haute Couture catwalk shows were much more subdued than usual.
Most designers, it seems, are sticking to saleable items, like suits,
instead of fantasy dresses. Shame. Thank goodness for Gaultier! He hasn’t lost his sense of humour. His strap-on jackets are the perfect anecdote to the winter binge. Clothes feeling a little snug after the holidays? (Who are you kidding? You’re popping buttons) Gaultier has the solution. Buy whatever size suits your fancy, sew on some straps, and voila- couture chic. Don’t listen to those fashion faux-pas’ at the office in their watered-down H&M Marc by Marc copies. Philistines! Just remember. It ain’t clothes, baby, it’s fashion. EC |
