I think menswear gets overlooked in general and that it’s more often than not portrayed as the dowdy brother to the eccentric sister (except at Versace in the good old days perhaps!). Jeans, dark colours and suits. Boring! | Sleazy disco, Clearasil kids and botox-assisted celebs. NagNagNag may be less uptight about their dress code than Trash but no less of a spectacle. At £4 an appearance at the club night de jour will set you back less than the average fash mag these days, but get there early or be disappointed. Tonight 10:30pm-3am, featuring dj TIGA. At The Ghetto, 5-6 Falconberg Court, W1
With this in mind I
was happy to see that for the Autumn/Winter 2003 collections there seemed
to be a light-hearted and vibrant feeling in the air - thanks to the English
eccentrics who hit Milan. Viktor and Rolf (always up for a laugh) presented their first menswear collection and true to form their sense of humour shone through. With a touch of the Dapper about them the models posed and preened in front of the crowd. Very Fred Astaire and please can I be Ginger? Not only did Vivienne Westwood give us men in bras she also presented some softer colours - pastel pinks, greys and blues. Perfect for the Gentle Man!? As usual Paul Smith gave us a selection of stripes and cartoon characters while Dries van Noten went back to school with electric blue trousers and blazers with seams bound in bright contrasting colours. If you're planning on wearing anything like this at the end of the year then you can go straight to the top of the class - and do some lines while you're there "I Can't Be Any Cooler!" With grey skies above wouldn't it be great to see the boys flashing around in some smart bright colours? However if you're going out on the pull, do not even consider Ms Westwood's bra because if you have man breasts honey, don't even leave the house. HH |
An interrogation of the notion of the public realm may sound a bit recondite. Publicness makes it more accessible with though-provoking pieces and critically acclaimed projects. Opens today at the ICA, The Mall, SW1. Noon-7:30pm.
