London is a cosmopolitan town and this weekend we're all helping to celebrate the start of the Chinese New Year. There's a day-long celebration in Trafalgar Square on Sunday but things kick off with an artistic edge tonight. | If your heart and mind is more set on Swiss Rösti than Chinese dumplings, this is the time to upgrade your attire. Ellis Brigham's Covent Garden shop is moving and has a 40% off clearout sale of ski and board clothing and accessories. Sale starts 10am today. 30-32 Southampton St, WC2. | ||
At 7pm, Chinese artist
Cai Guo-Qiang's specially-commissioned firecracker display will explode
from Tate Modern, the ex-wobbly bridge and erupt along the Thames (sounds
pretty good huh?!). The "one-minute spectacular" called Mr Ye
who loves dragons (or Ye Gong Hao Long if you can't read Chinese!) will
welcome in the year of the Ram. After the explosion, free jasmine tea and fortune cookies will be served at the Tate Modern where you can browse Cai's gun powder drawings which have been created by burning black powder and fuse wire into heavy Japanese paper and resemble large-scale etchings. The museum is open until 10pm anyway so maybe you could start the weekend off with a bit of culture and hang out for a bit in the bar looking intellectual and cool. And if you're still up for more Chinese action you could go along to Trafalgar Square on Sunday to watch some dancing, weapon skills (blimey!), martial arts and speeches. I think I might pop down for a fortune cookie or two. Who knows what the year of the Ram might have in store?
