Where everybody knows your name...
Velvet rope at a discount. Photo: Stone
Ever walked by this swank Soho establishment and wondered what it would take (or rather how much) to get past the red rope? If so, there may be hope for you window shoppers yet.

For the month of Feb, Abigail's Party is offering a modestly priced yearly membership for £70.
Modestly priced drinks at £2 until 1am and new stand-up comedy routines from Amused Moose at Barcode tonight. No velvet rope at Every Other Monday but advance reservation is recommended. Doors open at 8pm. 3-4 Archer St, W1. Reservations on 020 8341 1341
Named after Mike Leigh's 1977 comedy classic, Abigail's Party is a home away from home. Whilst club land becomes homogenized by chrome-trendy establishments, this place is as comfy as a womb. You aren't going to hear any generic charty-dance-pop, but you might hear musical anomalies such as The Pink Panther theme tune. And it's all the better for it.

Arranged like a house, there are five bars spread over two floors. Upstairs there are three lounges for lounging in, whilst downstairs there are banquettes for, er, sitting on.

Abigail is your host for the evening, offering finger snacks to her guests, but alas the drinks aren't free, which is probably a good thing. After all you don't want to be sick on gin now do you?

If you don't get that reference then you really need to see the play, currently running at The New Ambassadors Theatre in the West End.

'Abigail's Party' is the best play in the history of playing. The BBC2 play, based on the Hampstead Theatre production, has become a cult piece, none more so than for Alison Steadmans' triumphant portrayal of the fantastically awful host Beverly.

Embarrassment, hysteria and pathos are played out in this unflinching look at the pretensions of the nouveau riche. Beverly wears too much turquoise eyeshadow, and plies her quests with gin and nibbles, whilst sniping at husband Lawrence.

Lawrence is dissempowered, Sue looks awkward, Tony flirts with Beverly and Angela is oblivious to all of it. All to a soundtrack of Demis Rousseau and Donna Summer. Perfect.
