Go on, indulge your inner-groupie
('I'm with the band'), or simply pretend you're fifteen again (cider and
black and moshing optional). With four bands playing at each gig, the NME warm-up at Astoria is the bargain-hunter's way to catch up on the hot new sounds. |

Between February 4
and 14 the London Astoria is being transformed into rock central for the
NME Awards Shows 2003. This is your chance to see what has been dubbed
the 'New Rock Revolution', and get down with the young, wasted and beautiful. It's the perfect opportunity to impress your friends with your musical savoir-faire and underground nonce. In the past, this annual extravaganza has showcased international players such as Ash and Coldplay. The mood is now set for new bands to swagger onto the scene, with guitar-led sounds from both sides of the Atlantic. In addition to established headliners such as Starsailor, The Streets and The Coral, you can hear the raw and energetic sounds of The Thrills (Dublin's new hope), The 20-22s and Kiwi rockers The Datsuns (Deep Purple-esque rock). Darker delights include the devil-worshipping hipsters from San Francisco - The Warlocks (4th). But if you truly believe size matters, the 27-strong Polyphonic Spree will delight you with their cult choral offerings. Style magazine favourites Interpol, playing on February 9, are not to be missed. Part of the NYC Rock n' Roll renaissance, these guitar sophisticates are a little like The Strokes, only with less Labrador puppy appeal and smart Mod suits. Probably you were more mesmerised by the size of, er, her fruit basket than the actual lyrics of ‘Call me’. And now the object of your boyhood fantasies says she prefers playing with the lasses. Can it get any more tantalising? Don't miss the Sam Fox profile on Channel 4. 'Our Sam' tonight at 9pm | ||
