To boldly go where no jeans have gone before
Beam me a pair of Type 1s, Scottie
This week sees the launch of Levi's latest 60-second wonder ad, in support of its new jean The Type 1.

The ad, filmed in Los Angeles, features "bold characters, to represent a bold jean", according to Levi's.
Worship of Venus? Late night Wednesday at the National Gallery sees the opening of this year's major showpiece as it plasters its walls with the works of 16th Century superstar Titiano Vecellio. £9. Last entry 8:15pm. Trafalgar Sq, WC2.
Add a little pizzazz to art at the Composing Fashion event at the ICA tonight. Catwalk and After Party. 7pm. £15. The Mall, SW1.
It's more interesting in practice. Essentially, a bunch of mutant, bad boy-boy 'mouse men' and rather saucy 'mouse girls', kidnap an old lady's cat, hold it to ransom, and large their way round LA, before making a getaway.

The ad's directed by Frenchman Michel Gondry, who's made some of the most visually dazzling ads and music videos of recent years for the likes of Bjork, Daft Punk, the Strokes, Guinness, Smirnoff, and Levi's, including the most recent running through walls epic, Revolution.

The ad was launched on Feb 13 across Europe, and Levi's hope it propels Type 1 to the heights of success their last big launch, Engineered, enjoyed. Type 1 was developed after looking though Levi's archive, and is, in essence a maximised, slightly cartoonish version of the 501, in dark indigo denim, with all the main stuff like rivets, pockets, and Red Tab bigger, and bolder.

As for the advert, well, like most Levi's ads, it's one of very few which make getting to the cinema early worthwhile. And you can't say that about many screen ads.

Levi's Type 1 is available from Topman, Oxford Circus, W1, and other leading jeans retailers.
