All benders are so beautiful that
they should be hung in a gallery. Alright, so that's not strictly true,
but legendary 90s gay club, 'The Beautiful Bend' has just been turned
into an art exhibition.
In light of the current Leigh Bowery revival that is hitting the fashion world and Boy George's 'Taboo' musical, conceptual clubbing is big news again. |
Get out for lunch and head over to the Old Spitalfields Market, E1, and watch the Great Spitalsfield Pancake Race today at 12:30pm. Full of tossers, but everybody's welcome, straight, bent, merry or gay. | ||

And this retrospective show of Sheila Tequila and That Donald's legendary mid week one-nighters - which was a must for the hippest batty boys in all of Londonium - is essential for those who want to remember what they got up to there or indeed for those who want to pretend they went there. As their names both suggest, Sheila Tequila and That Donald liked to be a bit different, and instead of issuing uninspired PR drivel in a standard press release, they offered monthly themed short stories. However, the prose was seldom as interesting as some of the rabid tales that invariably circulated after a visit to the club. From its conception in 1993, the place was sleazier than the sleaziest sleazester in Sleazetown, despite, or in fact because of, its status as a celebrity hangout. The exhibition runs at the Magnani Gallery between now and the 12 April, and then excerpts from the show will then go on to the New York Art Fair, and it's always nice to be one step ahead of the rotten apple. But remember in the spirit of 'Beautiful Bend' to expect the unexpected, and that could mean bumping into a six-foot chicken or a snowman.
