Zöe Heller made a name for herself in the 90s, when she invented the young female diary narrative, the journalistic style parodied in Bridget Jones. Now in her thirties, Heller has moved to New York and become a novelist. Her second book, Notes from a Scandal, is causing quite the stir. |

At the center of the plot is the relationship between a fifteen-year-old boy, Steven Connolly, and his pottery teacher Sheba Hart. When their affair is discovered, the vilified and confused Hart hides out with a lonely colleague, Barbara Covett (Hart and Covett, geddit?) who is the voice of the novel. The titillating 'scandal' of the plot pales in comparison to the power dynamic between the two women. The book is more a study on loneliness and manipulation than a steamy account of an illicit affair. Pity, but still worth its place in your beach bag. Notes from a Scandal is sure to be one of the novels that everyone is discussing around dinner tables and water coolers. You wouldn't want to be left out of a conversation, would you? Notes
