Mum always said there is no such thing as a free ride. True, with men, I always end up paying for the last drink and taxi ride home. But a free read? Surely, that must be possible. |

A new website out of the States has a great new concept to ensure that good books get read. BookCrossing.com encourages people to leave their favourite book in a public place, be it coffee shop, bus stop, or restaurtant, with the hopes that someone will pick it up. Seems like a harmless enough concept, but BookCrossing is ruffling a few feathers, especially in the publishing industry. Conglomerates worry that the concept may reduce book sales, but quite the opposite seems to be true. Alice Seabold's haunting novel "The Lovely Bones" climbed up the bestseller list again this summer, seemingly due to word of mouth sales. And BookCrossing advocates are buying their favourite books in bulk, and leaving copies everywhere, in the hopes they get their personal picks back on the charts. Power to the people. EC |
