Just unswooshing it

Nike's swoosh is about to get a ticking off.

Adbusters - the anti-capitalist magazine - is selling their own anti-brand trainer, the "blackSpot" or "Unswoosher".

The four-day Halloween Film Fest at ICA features the real 24 Hour Party People, short film showcases and the Lux Award winner. From 5:30pm The Mall, SW1. £6.50.
At time of publishing there's still tickets to get for Justin Timberlake 7:30pm tonight at Earls Court, SW5. £25-45. 020 7734 8932 or online.

Kalle Lassen - Adbusters founder - is on a mission to dismantle Nike's brand champion status. The magazine will start producing the trainers as soon as 5,000 preorders have been placed. They will be stocked internationally and sold for approximately US$40.

Since Nike has recently taken over Converse, the blackSpot is launched as a socially conscious rival, but looks strangely like its competitor, with a mild case of acne.

Adbusters is calling the project an exercise in counterbranding, but by launching a US$500,000 "Re-think the Cool" marketing campaign and pimping the sneakers around CNN and The New York Times, it looks more like a case of, er, branding to me.

Closure-threatened theatre Bridewell introduces the cult hit Victor/Victoria to London. 7:30pm. Bride Lane, EC4. £16.50. 020 7936 3456.

So whether the 'Blackspot' can kick Nike into touch remains to be seen, I just wonder if Naomi Klein has ordered herself a pair yet.
