Tower Hamlets has long been one of the country's most deprived areas. We're not only talking anti-social behaviour, crap homes and lack of decent public services - that would qualify just about any area inside the M25 - but serious shortcomings in quality of life essentials. So, you might say, build them a Waitrose, send over the latest issue of The Face and a lorry load of po-faced, mulletted twats to ease assimilation with Hoxton. |

Instead, the good people of Cityside Regeneration have decided to take a crack at turning it around. For starters, they've converted a 19th Century Victorian school into The Whitechapel Centre, a creative pod, which turns the classic 'urban regeneration' concept on its head. Rather than creating a social project which relies on public funding
(like that ever works), surpluses of the income from the - very affordable
- tenants' rent and events is channelled straight back into local community
cultural development projects. It's a truly self-sustaining benchmark
project. |
