Whether you are a fan or not, the notorious Vivienne Westwood gets her well deserved retrospective at the V&A, starting today, marking her defiant rise from queen of punk couture to England's very own suitably eccentric fashion leader.

It is well known that her path to ultimate recognition from the fashion industry was anything but an easy ride - until recently she was far from a financial success and the Parisian and Milanese fashion houses that eagerly prey on British talent today (Galliano, McQueen, etc.) ironically did not come a-knocking on Westwood's door when she was at her most radical.

But of course times have changed, and Westwood's role in fashion has always been that of a leader - the one to bravely pave the way. She is certainly an inspiration to many different generations of fashionista from the 80s clubkids (now fortysomethings) who still worship the ground she hobbles around on - on those rocking horse platforms - to the twentysomething
