I can't say I've ever had the best relationship with opera.

Since developing a euphoric urge to conquer Poland after listening to Wagner, I've steered clear, but alas, it seems that opera is having a renaissance.

The Savoy Theatre has just launched a new opera house in London. A smaller venue than the Royal Opera House or the ENO (who inaugurated a completely refurbished London Coliseum in February), the Savoy Opera House is a more intimate affair. With all productions in English and boasting West End theatre prices, they aim to widen their audience.

Proving that it's not just an exclusively London-centric trend, cities from Copenhagen to Toronto are busy constructing ambitious prestige homes for the arias and bel cantos - even JR and Sue Ellen's Dallas has commissioned a Norman Foster opera house. Meanwhile, an opera chill-out compilation gave Enrique a run for his money in the Spanish charts this winter.

And sure enough, Hollywood has been quick to surf the zeitgeist, as one of the most anticipated Tinseltown productions at the moment is Joel Schumacher's remake of 'Phantom of the Opera'.
