Notting Hill living anno 2004

For years I have been told that the Westbourne Hotel was the place to stay. A cosy hotel tucked away in Notting Hill, filled with rock royalty and other glamorous scenesters.

So with a five star makeover, a new name (Guesthouse West) and help from people like Charlie McVeigh (Woody's) and Alastair Little (Tavola), this was sure to be a winner.

Chuckle with the charismatic if not outright odd Japanese Electric Eel Shock metal trio at Islington Academy's Bar. 7pm. 16 Parkfield St, N1. £6 08700 600 100 or online.

Grab the last remaining tix to preview of otherwise sold out Lifegame at the National Theatre. 8pm. Belvedere Rd SE1. £18-27. 020 7452 3000 or online.

Or so you would have thought? The one thing that's interesting here is that the rooms are for sale (buy-to-let) and judging by the fact that there are only three left, it seems like they're onto something.

Other than that, the only reason I could see staying here is if you were after a place with four walls and a bouncing bed. Cheap it is, chic it isn't.

But it's still early days for G-H-W. The location is great and with the soon-to-launch terrace and an atmosphere change, things could definitely still turn around.
