Ich bin kein Hamburger

If you're in or around Hamburg anytime over the next seven weeks, a trip to the Schleswig Holstein Musik Festival is a must.

Largely regarded as the most diverse music festival in Europe, the SHMF celebrates Europe's musical past, present and future, all against a breathtaking Baltic backdrop.

The Elefest festival of shorts opens with three local ones and a Chaplin classic at the Coronet. 7pm. 28 New Kent Rd, SE1. Free.

Iain Sinclair & Will Self end the Clerkenwell Lit Fest at St Lukes. 6pm. 161 Old St, EC1 £7.50. 020 7691 0319/here. Or join the after party at the Slaughtered Lamb. 9:30pm. 34 Gt Sutton St, EC1. Free.

Choose from over 130 events held in venues of all shapes and sizes (including barns and castles) and check out what's going on culturally in the Czeck Republic, the nation under spotlight this year.

But it's not all black tie and Beethoven. This year's event has an urban vibe with the return of Sonarsound. The legendary Kampnagel theatre is the setting for a night of musical experimentation from the brains behind Barcelona's Sonar Festival. Electronic masters such as Matthew Herbert and Jamie Lidell line up alongside acts like the spellbinding Max de Wardner and Icelandic oddity Mugison.

Quirky downbeat indie pop at Electrowerkz by Pinback. 7:30pm. 7 Torrens St, N1. £7. 08700 600 100 or online.
Head down to Salvador and Amanda for some tapas and house sangria at the weekly Desert Island Discs night. 8 Gt Newport St, WC2. Free.

Crawl inside Hamburg's musical heart and get to grips with Baltic culture. With such an abundance of musical goodness on offer, my only advice would be to time your trip carefully or you may find yourself sitting in a field listening to folk music!
