Sustaining the future: support The Horse Hospital
Nose job

Shock horror, the UK's lifestyle publishing power base shifts to Liverpool.

Alright not so, but North West based independent publishers Peppered Sprout aim to challenge the London-centric bias of most style magazines with their new locally produced mag, Plastic Rhino.

Love all around with the Gay Men's Chorus, um, wedding music and Mischief La Bas in Love is in the Square. 5-7:30pm. Trafalgar Sq, WC2.

Neatly timed to coincide with the unfortunate demise of Sleaze (the publication, not the concept), the oddly named Plastic Rhino is a collective of writers, artists, designers, photographers, make-up artists, stylists and film makers who all seek to publish a new and innovative concept-zine.

With a decidedly underground slant, you won't be fed meaningless 'style' barometers and more meaningless celebrity tittle-tattle; rather, the project is a platform for those with trenchant opinions and observations about popular culture to deliver an alternative dialogue.

With a creatively pragmatic approach, the monthly title will constantly experiment and re-invent itself, in the manner of a shrewd pop icon. Permanency is taboo, and that even extends to the sticker logo that can be peeled off.

It's a Two Culture Clash at Hammersmith Palais from Wall of Sound at Channel 4's Summer Session. 8pm-2am. 12 Acklam Rd, W10. £7. 0870 154 4040 or here.

It's Barcelona vs Bristol at Spitz where BCN trip reggae outfit Go Lem System goes up against Babyhead. 8pm. 109 Commercial St, E1. £10. 020 7392 9032 or online.

Although the magazine will feature national content and be available throughout the country, its launch adds weight to the status of Liverpool as a genuine capital of culture.

And one that has more to offer than just The Beatles, Cilla or Brookside.

Plastic Rhino - August issue is available now for £3.50 from Magma and Microzine (Islington)
