Experimental cooking is great for one-offs, but it seems like even Heston Blumenthal - to the UK what Ferran Adrià is to Catalunya - knows that sometimes one has got to go back to the basics, which is why he bought the Hinds Head Hotel, a Tudor pub adjacent to his triple Michelin-starred restaurant, The Fat Duck in Bray. |

The Hinds Head is not your average grandpa's boozer. It's rumoured to have been a favourite of the Royals over the years and the authentic oak panelling is a nice change from the usual gastro hell. British cooking is what's on offer here. Heston teamed up with Dominique Chapman from The Cow to create a menu of comfort food, with several dishes that replicate traditional Tudor meals. Expect Scottish beef, lobster, steak and kidney pies, cobblers, freshly squeezed apple juice, real pastry, a great selection of wines and ales and Bloody Marys to die for. Twiglets beware: there's no calorie counting here. |

So 45 minutes out of London and you can have gourmet Heston for lunch and good ol' fashioned Heston for dinner. Personally, I can't get down there fast enough. The Hinds Head Hotel (no actual rooms though) |
