In these modern times the traditional jazz club owner is in a tricky position.

With today's stringent health and safety regulations, if you go for the archetypal smoky atmosphere, low ceiling and even lower lighting you're liable to get fined before you even open your doors.

i-D magazine goes Live and kicks it off with launch party at Plastic People. 9pm-2am. 147 Curtain Rd, EC2. £5.

Skip the gig@Astoria & head straight to Eighties Matchbox B-Line Disaster's afterparty at Salvador & Amanda with the Whoopee Club. 10pm on 8 Gt Newport St, WC2. £5.

Full marks then, have to go to the people behind London's latest jazz venue: the Bluejay Lounge.

Located in the jazz-starved suburb of Shepherd's Bush, the stylish Bluejay offers a clever mix of live music which starts off mellow at the start of the week, but increases in tempo to deep funky house (still accompanied by live music) by the weekend.

Expect chic surroundings, a sophisticated older crowd, table service and a dress code that forbids football jerseys (this is definitely my kind of place).

Red hot Brixton band Clor is playing at Shoreditch boozer Legion tonight. 8pm-12am. 348 Old Street, EC1. £5.

Haunch of Venison opens for 2002 Turner winner Keith Tyson. 10am-6pm. 6 Haunch of Venison Yard, W1. Free.

Plus, an experienced bar staff (with a cocktail menu as long as your saxophone) and a '‘fork and platter' style menu to save you from stopping off at the local kebab shop on the way home, mean that the Bluejay may have very well found a crafty niche in the capital's seemingly overcrowded club scene.
