Well,
after two weeks, our UJ daffodils are all finally dead,
so we're holding a G&T wake this weekend: it's what they
would have wanted. But in true circle of life style (sing
it Elton), as one thing dies, another celebrates a birthday,
and this weekend it's
Urban Nerds and
Minimal Carnival's 1st, the
Hurly Burly Girlies' 2nd, and
Lasermagnetic's 3rd. We'll always remember you, daffs.
This weekend's guide is brought to you in association with
The
39 Steps at The Criterion, who are giving away a full-on
sleuthing ensemble including a Lock & Co hat, Scottish Mackintosh
coat, and a Globetrotter suitcase, as well as two tickets
to see the Laurence Olivier award winning show. Click
here for more details.

Mephisto
One of the last clubs that I enjoyed
going to in a non-cheesy way was Cherry Jam - I know,
I don't get out much. That aside, CJ and Neighbourhood
founders Deon Kerk and Michael Watson seem to have
a nack for getting the right balance of groovy urban
nightspot and non-cliquey vibe.
Having opened quietly at the end of last year, their
latest venue Mephisto is equally unpretentious and
could well be the hit club alternative of the summer.
I hesitate to use the term 'funky' but there doesn't
seem to be any other way to describe the low-lit space
with it's red and black decor and poppy graphics lining
the walls - there's also an antiquarian-styled 'Library'
space further back, good for cosy get-togethers with
a large-ish group.
Admittedly it's not really about the food here, with
cocktails like See You In Hell (rose flower wine,
lime, mango and white rum) on the menu, but there's
yakitori chicken and edamame if you're feeling peckish,
which is better than the usual potato wedges and gunky
dip.
With regular up-and-coming House DJs on the menu
too, Mephisto brings a much-needed dose of cool to
the West End.

Iznik
Kaftan
Like the reverse effect of a rain dance I'm hoping
a visit to this new Turkish mezze joint, particularly
considering it has the word 'kaftan' in its name,
might prompt some properly good weather.
Sister restaurant to the original, zanier, Iznik
in Highbury, Iznik K is the smarter, more pared down
Chelsea version - jewel-like colours and elegant lines
punctuated by Turkish glass lampshades and objets
- but it still manages to give more than a nod to
the well-known Ottoman robe, images of which, along
with some silk examples, decorate its walls.
But enough about kaftans, the food here is good too.
Along with the usual grilled meats and stuffed vine
leaves you'll find 'manti' little lamb ravioli that
come in a yogurt sauce drizzled with chili oil, and
'mucver' light courgette and feta fritters, and and
the homemade baclava is worth saving room for too.
This is food that really was designed to be shared
and, along with the unfussy opening hours of the place,
it will make you long for lazy, balmy, flip-flop-wearing
evenings.
If we all wish hard enough maybe we can make it happen.
