Weekend Guide

We know all about that damned mortal coil. You work, work, and then work some more. Isn't that how it goes? And with so many things to see and people to do, life, in the immortal words of Professor Bueller, moves pretty fast. Maybe it's time to stop and look around, so you don't miss it. Or you could just drink and dance your way through instead.

This weekend's guide is brought to you in association with Cabaret at the Lyric Theatre, where the current production of Kander and Ebb's legendary Weimar Berlin musical has garnered incessant praise. Click here for more details on the great ticket offer that we've cooked up with the lovely folks over at the Lyric for all you lovely UJ subscribers.

DJDeranged and Demented
You have to wonder sometimes, what goes through folks' heads when they come up with their event names. Can you imagine the scene? "I know! We'll call our night deranged and demented. That'll keep the crowds a really friendly bunch." Thankfully the sweet mix of sexy minimal and deep house should simultaneously keep the demented and deranged preoccupied, whilst making it Friday-perfect for the rest of us.

Time:
10pm - 4am, After party until 11am
Place:
Aquarium 256-264 Old St, EC1V 9DD
Cost:
£10, £8 in advance, Free entry to Redlight after party

musicBe
With the demise of the Old Proud (and yes, I promise to stop harking on about it soon enough), it was perhaps the Saturday Be nights that we missed the most. But guess what? That's right: new Proud, new Be. No Hamlet puns, no Cartesian ridiculousness, just top bands like They Came From The Stars... I Saw Them, great DJs, and a shameless touch of theatricality.

Time:
8pm-3am
Place:
Proud Camden, Stables Market, NW1 8AH
Cost:
£10, £8 Before 11pm

AGENDA

Lilianne Lijn
You might be forgiven for thinking that being dubbed a "cosmic artist" these days, could be construed as something of an insult. But not if you're the NASA-funded artist, Liliane Lijn, creator of this groundbreaking and literally interstellar exhibition at the Riflemaker.

artGajin Fujita: Pacific Tsunami
Pacific Tsunami -not the boxing day disaster, but Gajin Fujita's new show which takes graffiti, hip hop, and traditional Japanese figures and layers them up with bits of white gold and gold leaf. A load of hot air or a storming success? Hmm.

music2Verde's Requiem
I have a close friend who insists that 'The Greatest Arias in the World', Parts 1 and 2, contain all the classics that any normal human being could ever need. Needless to say, my frustrated rage is guaranteed. "Classical soundbiting be damned! But what about," I mutter between rasped gasps, "the whole of Holst's The Planets, and not just Mars? And Handel's Rinaldo? And Verdi's Requiem?" 90 minutes of emotional rollercoaster right there.

Time:
7:30pm
Place:
Southbank Centre, Belvedere Rd, SE1 8XX
Cost:
£9-£55

musicNeon Noise Project
Big news these days, Canadian DJ deities du jour Mstrkrft are headlining this gut-trembling, knee-jerking, bass-pounding example of how parties are meant to be. When you get the likes Kitsune's Jerry Bouthier and Autokratz, Tronik Youth, Boombox's DJ ROkk and Blogger's Delight residents, Skull Juice et al., in the role of support guests, that alone tells you quite how huge this is going to be.

Time:
10pm-6am
Place:
Unit 7 -566 Cable Street, E1W 3HB
Cost:
£10

CONSUME

Sugar Bullets
The coming Olympics are already set to be memorable, if not for the most sporting of reasons. Amplified have stuck some of the best logos from past ceremonies onto t-shirts to remember a simpler time, when torches went unmolested, tax payers didn't drown under construction expenses, and we all stood hand in hand. Ahhh. £25

musicWills & Moody Rock n Roll Jumble Sale
No better way to make your weekend complete than with a bit of bargain hunting. Taking the jumble sale of yore (that well known jumble hot spot) and adding a bar and music to the proceedings, it's a world away from the nasty high street hustle. If that's not bargain enough, try The Jumble Ball for a good old rummage.

Place:
St Aloysius Social Club, 21 Phoenix Road, Euston, London NW1

EAT

The Establishment
This Parsons Green bar-slash-restaurant has a slightly nineties vibe - maybe it's the retro-ness of the place with its swivelly chairs, zippy decor and cool Brittania English bull terrier mascot.

But don't hold that against it. It's good to find a modestly-sized place that manages to get the right balance between buzzy cocktail bar and modern British brasserie without letting either side down.

The food is well taken care of by exec chef Neil Mackenzie, who serves up things like braised rabbit with peas and Jerusalem artichoke puree and roast sea bass with Charlotte potatoes and brown shrimps, as well as hearty brunches and roasts at the weekend.

And when it comes to drinks you can order wines by the flight, if you so wish, as they've got one of those natty Enomatic jobbies (who hasn't, suddenly?), or turn to the very competent Tim Oakly (former barman at Babington House) whose passion is unusual gins and who also has a nack for discovering spirits that have drifted by the wayside like various different meads and something called Shrub Cordial which tastes like liquid Werthers Originals.

Well done.

Real Food Festival
Ignore the rather nauseatingly smiley people on the festival website's homepage, this event has been much-hyped by many in the food and restaurant industries and the hunch is it will deliver.

Billing itself as 'pretty much the biggest farmers market ever', and sponsored by Dalyesford Organic and Whole Foods, the Real Food Festival is a smorgasboard of gourmet cottage industries, boutique food producers, workshops, cooking classes and, of course, tastings galore.

Trudie Styler, Giorgio Locatelli and Zac Goldsmith will be taking part in a heated debate on the pros and cons of going organic and there will be a Real Food Theatre where chefs like Jun Tanaka, Shane Osborn and Raymond Blanc will be showing us all how to really do it.

If you haven't got anything better to do it's your chance to go, eat a lot, and get ethical in Earls Court.

Hours:
Thurs 24th, Fri 25th & Sun 27th April 10am-6pm / Sat 26th 10am-7pm
Place:
Earls Court Exhibition Centre, Warwick Road, SW5 9TA
