Finally.
Now I'm not going to say it, just in case I jinx the whole
thing, but really: it's here! And just to make sure you
get the most out of it, we've got plenty to keep you out
and about this weekend. But in between all the goodies that
we've picked out for your pleasure, I want you to promise
me to soak up some of that joy.
This weekend's guide is brought to you in association with
Design
By Us, a Danish design team who produce innovative and
vibrant home interiors tinged with a touch of humour. Specialising
in tables, lamps and chairs they also offer complete home
design solutions. Time to abandon Ikea kids, the sun's out
and so is flat pack.

Santo
Having only been open for a couple
of weeks, and managing to keep very quiet about
the fact, this contemporary cantina is already
a bit of a hit with West London locals.
There's been a wave (pun intended) of Mexican
cafes opening over the last year or so - Taqueria,
Wahaca, etc - some more authentic than others,
but this one seems to have just the right vibe.
There are no pinatas or sombreros hanging from
the ceiling, one of the owners is called Carlos
de la Cruz - which has to be one of the coolest
names ever - and they don't bang on about street
food as almost every new ethnic restaurant that
opens seems to these days, they just do good
Mexican food with a few modern twists.
There are the classic quesadillas and burritos
for lunch and in the evening it gets a bit more
'fine dining', with lemon sole ceviche and whole
chargrilled fish of the day, served with chili
guajillo (a type of salsa) and garlic mayo.
But it's the breakfasts we're most tempted
by, like the burrito of scrambled eggs, refried
beans and chilorio (chili pork).
Now, would it be wrong to order a margherita
before midday?

Hunan
I'm not sure how I missed this family-run, Taiwanese-influenced restaurant on Pimlico Road, although saying that, I have a feeling it suits them just fine keeping the low profile they do.
The decor is rather beige and un-Chinesey. There is no menu, and, apart from the very enthusiastic Michael - the son of the owner, it turns out, who greets you at the door and keeps things ticking over - it seems to take a while for them to realise you're there to eat. And then, just when you're starting to feel a bit cross at being kept waiting for so long, someone whisks over, asks if there's anything you don't eat and whether you'd like them to begin.
And then the food begins to arrive, little
plate after little plate of some of the tastiest
morsels you're likely to try outside China:
an intensely savoury, ginger-infused, minced
pork and mushroom broth; garlicky green bean
tempura; prawn dumplings, with proper fat king
prawns inside; bang bang tofu salad; rich, sweet,
braised pork with aubergine...
This was around the point that we stopped remembering,
drunk on the flavours, but there were about
ten dishes in total and I think there would
have been more if we hadn't told them to stop.
Next time I'm not eating a bite until dinner
time.
