Weekend Guide

Bank holiday weekend; whatever your mood, we've got you covered. If you're feeling morbid, head to St Vitus' Dance. Got some unresolved ambitions? Break a world record. Fancy discovering a new continent? Africa's all yours. And if you're happy and you know it, clap your hands. Or, you know, don't. Whatever - it's your weekend. (But it's our guide, so keep reading.)

This weekend's guide is brought to you in association with Ardbeg, 2008's World Whisky of the Year. Distilled on the Scottish island of Islay, its distinctly peaty taste has wooed fans for years, and now it's unleashing the untamed spirit on London with the Beastie Mobile. And you thought all Scotland had was shortbread and tartan.

Wonder how she gets her victims.

artUBS Long Weekend 2008
The Turbine Hall transforms into a micro art, music and performance arena for the weekend, but with macro events like artist Alison Knowles' vast serving salad for 300 and Patrick Wolfe's musical howling to Nan Goldin's enormous projected stills. I honestly don't know how they'll fit it all in.

The audience loved it so much that the band's releasing it as a limited edition B-side, and three UJ subscribers can win a signed copy. Tell us: What would you name your pet wombat and why?

It's just too easy to get a Guinness World Record these days. Or maybe that's a pint of Guinness. I forget. Either way, if you've failed at shovelling crackers in your mouth, or your cousin's pet Jimmy missed largest hamster by a millimetre, have a crack at the largest ever flamenco dancing display, down erm, Regent Street. Very patriotic.

Ardbeg Beastie Mobile
If you thought the scariest thing to come out of Scotland was sulking in Loch Ness, you were wrong, as the Ardbeg Beastie Mobile escapes Islay's shores to force its Whisky of the Year upon the unsuspecting folk of Canary Wharf. Be afraid; but not afraid enough to pass up free booze and cheese.

EAT

ICA Cafe & Bar
The latest stylish offering from Oliver Peyton, under the guise of his 'very British bakery' and catering company Peyton & Byrne (Byrne is his mother's maiden name), provides another good reason to go for lunch or a few 'cultural' cocktails and soak up some artsy-ness.

The cafe, with its Pez-like tiles and bright and breezy ways, is the perfect spot to munch on salmon and haddock fish cakes or a Black Gold burger with goats cheese and vine tomatoes - not forgetting to indulge in the homemade Jammy Dodgers that are P&B's speciality.

While the bar promises to be a right little goer, with record launches, dj sets and film screenings to be enjoyed alongside cocktails like the ICA Grande (fresh strawberries and basil with Chambord, Grand Marnier and cracked pepper) or a Peyton Pimm's (like the classic, only fruitier).

We also like the idea of the movie double bill and moonlight picnic in the ICA's private garden to celebrate the Summer Solstice on 21 June, with hampers available from the Cafe and tunes provided by The Big Chill. Nice.

£30

Gilgamesh
It may feel like something of a guilty pleasure, particularly since Paris Hilton was hanging out there on her last visit to London, but there's something that keeps me going back to Gilgamesh.

Maybe it's the Babylonian epic-ness of the place, or the extraordinary hydraulic sliding roof that gives you that inside-yet-outside feeling that's particularly appealing on a sunny weekend, or the proximity to the railway track, giving you an added thrill every time a train speeds past. Who am I kidding? It's Ian Pengelley's food.

I'm particularly excited to see he has recently launched a chef's table menu; eleven courses of pan-Asian loveliness, including salad of sweet shrimp with caviar and chu toro (medium fatty tuna), grilled wagyu beef with spicy ponzu and truffle and Malay noodles with lobster and watermelon jelly with sweet basil foam.

It may look like a WAG's boudoir but as long as Pengelley keeps cooking, I'll probably keep going.

Hours:
Mon-Sun 12-3pm and 6pm-12am
Place:
Camden Stables Market, Chalk Farm Road, NW1 8AH
Cost:
£45 (Chef's Table menu £75)
