Weekend Guide

Ah, the eternal question: if Hitler were a hippie, would we be happier? Would he have taken part in (the conveniently German-named) Flugtag, or donned his drag-best for the Circus dancefloor? These and more earth shattering questions are answered in our weekend guide. What if the hokey kokey really is what it's all about? God we're wise...

This weekend's guide is brought to you in association with Betwixt, an adult fairytale set between two worlds in need of rescuing by a conquering hero and his great Queen; both male leads. Encountering seductive nymphs, theatrical troupes and a singing disembodied head along the way, this witty musical romp packs more punch than the chocolate bar and is twice as sweet.

FRI IF HITLER HAD BEEN A HIPPY FRI CIRCUS 2ND BIRTHDAY SUN AITBF SUMMER SERIES

FRIDAY

FilmSkidoo
Has anyone else noticed how, despite the unrelenting climate of retrophilia, the gaping hole that was the '60s has remained untouched, save for the odd hen night? Taking Otto Preminger's 1968 cult comedy as an excuse, the Curzon is out to redress the balance, with a beatnick/hippy-fest from 9:30, free beer for the fancy-dressed, and a screening at 11:30. Alas no kool aid. Squares.

Time:
9:30pm
Place:
Curzon Soho, 99 Shaftesbury Ave, W1D 5DY
Cost:
£10
Info:

artIf Hitler Had Been A Hippy How Happy Would We Be
I'm always rather surprised by how nice the Chapman brothers are. One rather expects them to have giant penises for noses, mumbling, bug-eyed, about enslaving the world in a series of ghastly machines. But only they would buy up a tonne of Hitler's (yes, that Hitler's) dull landscapes, and re-deck them in hippy paraphernalia.

Time:
10am-6pm
Place:
White Cube, 48 Hoxton Sq, N1 6PB
Cost:
Free
Info:

djCircus 2nd Birthday
A room full of clowns or drag queens - which is scarier? The jury may be out, but they'll both be here, along with Sophie Ellis Bextor and Alphabeat to celebrate Circus's 2nd birthday. If that's not enough, expect the usual cirque shenanigans and a dancefloor packed to see in the anniversary weekend in the freakiest.

Time:
10:30pm-3:30am
Place:
Soho Revue Bar, 11 Walkers Court, W1F 0ED
Cost:
£10

IN TONIGHT

Suggs in the City
If you're in need of some Thursday, pre-weekend down time check out Suggs in the City: the first show airs tonight on ITV1 and features former Mayor man Ken Livingstone. Filmed in The Colony Room in Soho, it promises lots of exclusive acoustic performances and Ken waxing lyrical about elections. If nothing else it might help you nod off.

SATURDAY

artFree Range
Like blissful, free-range chickens destined to have their eggs stolen, sold and eaten, 3,000 graduating art students get set to exhibit (and party off) the last three years of sweat, tears and paint, before being struck by the empty query of what comes next. Could anyone possibly construct a better analogy?

Time:
10am-7pm
Place:
The Old Truman Brewery, 91 Brick La, E1 6QL
Cost:

djSavage Legends Vs Nuke Them All
Once you're able to put something like "evicted from last venue, a strip club, for being too raucous" on your CV, a nightclub like Nuke Them All starts to run out of mischief to cause. Or maybe it just opens more doors. Like this new joint venture with Savage Legends, featuring a billion bass-heaving DJs, and a whole ten-hour (plus after-party) marathon of carnage.

Time:
10pm-6am
Place:
Unit 7, 566 Cable St, E1W 3HB
Cost:
£12
Info:

djThe Insomniacs Ball
Sure the Haunts and Ghost Frequency will be playing live in the main room. Of course Adventures Close to Home have got in the likes of Radioclit and Riton on DJ duty. And the Lovely Jonjo and Punks Jump Up may well be mashing it all up later on. But it's the giant birdcage with the cavorting firebreathers that really caught my eye.

Time:
9:30pm-6am
Place:
SeOne, 41-43 Saint Thomas St,SE1 3QX
Cost:
£9.50 adv

danceTea Dance
First goes the Routemaster, then goes public smoking, and now, thank you Boris, it's goodbye to drinking on the Tube. Is there nothing British left that is sacred? We simply can't afford another loss, people. Especially nothing as marvelous as drinking tea, eating cake, dancing like old nutters and back to drinking tea again. Doesn't it just make you fell warm and fuzzily patriotic all over?

Time:
2-5p
Place:
Old Finsbury Town Hall, Rosebery Ave, EC1R 4RP
Cost:
£8

A recent beetroot experience involved a frightening trip to the ladies and the discovery that this rather special vegetable has some interesting dye-like properties once in wends its way through your insides. The Adventures in the Beetroot Field summer-long series promises no such nasty surprises, and kicks off tonight with mercurial talent FrYars for an intimate live performance, Trailblazing AITBF favourites the Golden Silvers, as well as London MC Dels.

Shanghai Tang
We're deciding it's time to give in to the weather - clouds are now officially fashionable. Or at least they are in the hands of East-meets West concept store Shanghai Tang, who have come out with these cloud themed accessories. Clear skies are so overrated.

Quo Vadis
To lift our spirits during this drizzly old weather I'm bigging up two slick, brand spanking newies this weekend. If you can't spoil yourself on a rainy day, after all, when can you?

There was quite a stir when golden boys Sam and Eddie Hart, the brothers behind hip Spanish joints Fino and Barrafina, nabbed the illustrious Quo Vadis - Ivy and Scotts boss Richard 'perma-tan' Caring for one must have been seething.

With a promise to restore the establishment to its former glory (the place originally opened for business in the 1920s) the Harts have installed a grill room on the ground floor - serving a catalogue of classics, like proper steak bearnaise, under the watchful eye of former Fino chef Jean Philippe Patruno - and a members' club and private dining rooms upstairs. The club and restaurant will also house a collection of works by various YBAs - a nod to when Damien Hirst was running the show with MPW.

Another good sign is the short, sweet and fairly priced wine list. Who, apart from city boys, wants a telephone directory-size tome to get lost in?

Just enough pomp with minimum pretense - it looks like the Harts are in the right place.

Kingly Club, St Martin's Lane
The original Kingly Club in Soho is the sort of place I fear I might be getting too old for. All Clockwork Orange-white banquettes, filled with lusty, up-for-it, twenty-somethings, knocking back lethal cocktails to thumping beats.

Its new sister bar/restaurant is equally sleek and spacey - a style of decor that always makes me feel slightly nervous, as if might has well have turned up in full Victorian garb - but then chef Andrew Lasseter often seems to end up in places that look like they could have been built for an Austin Powers film (he's held the fort most admirably at Cocoon for the last few years).

At KC St Martin's Lane the beauty is that you have a choice - you can either do the cocktails/thumping beats thing if you're feeling particularly fresh and feisty or, if you're feeling a little more sedate (yet still in the mood for fishtanks in the walls and plenty of chrome), you can indulge in Lassester's exemplary modern Japanese creations in the downstairs Kyashii restaurant.

Dine on Wagyu beef with sake wild mushrooms or roasted John Dory with yuzu and chili and practice your best pout.
